Private Beaches and Beach Clubs in St Barts

Every beach in Saint-Barthélemy is public by law. The term “private beach” refers to beach clubs that offer sunbeds, dining and music on managed sections of the shoreline. Access to the sand itself remains free everywhere, but comfort comes at a price. BARNES Saint-Barthélemy presents the best private beaches on the island.

Each club has its own character. Some lean into DJ sets and celebration, others into fine dining or quiet relaxation. The right pick depends on where you stay, the atmosphere you prefer and which stretch of coastline draws you in. Here are the five leading beach clubs in St Barts.

Nikki Beach, the Saint-Jean institution

Nikki Beach has been a fixture on Saint-Jean Bay since 2002. The club is easy to spot with its white teepees, beachfront daybeds and a festive atmosphere that builds steadily from lunch through late afternoon. Resident DJs set the tone throughout the day.

The menu blends international dishes with Caribbean influences. Sushi platters, grilled fish and generous salads make up most of the offering. A daybed for three includes towels and an umbrella. Booking several days ahead is strongly advised during high season, particularly between December and April.

The western side of Saint-Jean Beach, facing the Eden Rock promontory, is where most clubs cluster. Nikki Beach remains the most recognized of all, drawing both long-time residents and first-time visitors alike.

Gyp Sea, bohemian spirit on Shell Beach

Gyp Sea sits on Shell Beach, steps from the harbor in Gustavia. The club combines a pool, comfortable loungers and a Raw Bar launched in 2024, where tartares, crudos and ceviches are served beachside. Grilled seafood and barbecue dishes anchor the main menu.

The Day Pass includes brunch, a lounger and pool access. Water activities run directly from the beach, from Seabob rides to paddleboard sessions and Fliteboard eFoils. The vibe stays laid-back, with daily DJ sets at a volume that still allows conversation.

Shell Beach, recognizable by its pink and white shells, hosts two private beaches side by side. Gyp Sea stands out with its bohemian positioning and water sports, while neighboring Shellona leans more toward Mediterranean gastronomy.

Shellona, Mediterranean flavors by the sea

Shellona shares Shell Beach with Gyp Sea but delivers a different experience. Greek chef Yiannis Kioroglou leads a generous Mediterranean menu built around whole grilled fish, shared mezze plates and fresh seafood. The kitchen philosophy is one the club displays proudly.

The energy picks up in the late afternoon, carried by live bands and DJ sets. Sunsets over Gustavia Bay add to the atmosphere. Shellona opens daily and welcomes guests from the Carl Gustaf hotel as well as independent visitors.

Just steps from central Gustavia, Shell Beach is one of the most accessible stretches of sand on the island. The proximity of shops and harbor restaurants makes it a natural starting point for a day split between beach and town.

Nao Beach, fusion cuisine and elegance in Saint-Jean

Nao Beach opened recently on Saint-Jean Bay. The club positions itself around Mediterranean-Japanese fusion cuisine, with chefs who previously worked at venues like Nobu in Los Angeles. Katsu Milanese, lobster with yuzukosho and wahoo carpaccio headline a menu that clearly sets Nao apart from other clubs on the island.

The layout alternates between sunbeds, cabanas and a covered terrace facing the water. Service runs through late afternoon, accompanied by background DJ sets. Reservations are strongly recommended during high season, especially for beachfront cabanas.

Saint-Jean Bay now hosts three major clubs within a few hundred meters of each other. Nao Beach, Nikki Beach and the Eden Rock beach club cover complementary atmospheres, from international celebration to refined dining.

La Cabane, Cheval Blanc refinement on Flamands Beach

La Cabane is the feet-in-the-sand restaurant of the Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France hotel, located on Flamands Beach. Chef Jean Imbert serves a refined Caribbean menu, from ceviche to the signature burger and an artichoke salad with parmesan. Breakfast is also available, with both a buffet and à la carte options.

Unlike the clubs in Saint-Jean or on Shell Beach, La Cabane favors calm and discretion. Flamands Beach, the longest on the island at roughly 630 meters, offers a more peaceful setting than Saint-Jean Bay. The restaurant is open to outside guests by reservation.

The Cheval Blanc, awarded “Palace” distinction by the French Ministry of Tourism, also features a Guerlain spa and 61 rooms and suites. For long-term residents, having this caliber of establishment nearby is a deciding factor when choosing the Flamands area.

Enjoying beach club life with BARNES Saint-Barthélemy

Having a quality private beach nearby weighs in the decision when choosing a neighborhood to rent or invest in Saint-Barthélemy. Saint-Jean and its three clubs, Gustavia with the two Shell Beach venues, and Flamands with the Cheval Blanc form a triangle that covers most of the island’s offering.
